From the UK, Marrakech is a short flight of roughly three and a half to four hours, the time difference is at most an hour and UK passport holders do not normally need a visa for stays up to 90 days: the planning is mostly about how many days you have and booking your driver and guide before you fly.
No visa for UK passport holders for tourist stays up to 90 days at the time of writing (confirm on GOV.UK), direct flights to Marrakech of roughly 3.5 to 4 hours from London, at most one hour of time difference, and a private driver-guide arranged before you fly. Book half-term, Easter and Christmas weeks early.
Planning a Trip to Morocco From the UK and Ireland: The Short Version
Morocco is one of the easiest long-haul-feeling trips from the UK. Direct flights to Marrakech from London and several other UK airports take roughly three and a half to four hours, the time difference is at most an hour, and UK passport holders do not normally need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days. A long weekend works if you stay around Marrakech, and a week is enough for the desert and the Atlas Mountains.
Fly into Marrakech for the shortest trip, build in a night in the Sahara if you have four days or more, and arrange your private driver and guide before you fly so that the first day starts at the airport arrivals hall instead of a taxi queue. Check the official travel advice for your passport a few weeks before and again a few days before you go.
Passport, Visa and Official Travel Advice
- Visa. UK passport holders do not normally need a visa for tourism of up to 90 days, and Irish passport holders are in the same position at the time of writing. Rules can change, so confirm on the official pages below.
- Passport validity. The Moroccan embassy advises that the passport should be valid for at least three months on the date of entry. Some operators ask for more, so renew early if your passport is close to its limit.
- Official advice. For British travelers: the FCDO foreign travel advice for Morocco and its entry requirements page. For Irish travelers: the Department of Foreign Affairs travel advice for Morocco.
- Cash. There are limits on bringing in large amounts of foreign currency without declaring it; the official advice pages explain the thresholds.

Flights From the UK and Ireland
Several airlines, including easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, TUI and British Airways, have flown direct from UK airports to Marrakech, and published flight times from London run around three hours 30 to three hours 50 minutes. Routes and frequencies change by season, so look at current timetables before you commit; from smaller UK airports and from Ireland, check what is flying for your dates.
- Marrakech has the widest choice of direct flights and is the base for most of our trips.
- Casablanca, Fes and the coast may suit a different start or finish: an open-jaw ticket (fly into one city and out of another) avoids backtracking on a longer route such as our 7-day itinerary or 10-day itinerary.
- Early or late flights: tell us your flight times and we arrange the pickup around them; see the private transfers.
Time Difference, School Holidays and When to Go
Morocco keeps one time all year (UTC+1) and moves back an hour during Ramadan. That makes it the same time as the UK in British Summer Time and an hour ahead in winter, with an hour less during Ramadan, so there is no jet lag to speak of and you can plan a first-day sightseeing walk.
- School half-terms, Easter and Christmas are the busiest periods for travelers from the UK and Ireland. Drivers, desert camps and good riads fill early, so book those weeks ahead. See the Christmas and New Year guide.
- Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summer is very hot in the south and winter nights are cold in the desert. The best time to visit Morocco guide goes month by month.
- Ramadan moves each year; travel is possible, with adjusted opening hours and a quieter feel.
How Many Days: Long Weekend, Week or Longer
- 3 to 4 days: Marrakech with day trips: Ait Ben Haddou, Ouzoud waterfalls, the Ourika Valley or Essaouira, all private and with pickup. See the private day trips.
- 4 to 5 days: add a night in the desert: 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour or the 4-day version.
- 7 days: imperial cities and the Sahara: 7-day private tour from Marrakech.
- 10 days or more: the full loop from Casablanca through Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech: see the 10-day itinerary.

Money, Phone and Plugs for UK and Irish Visitors
Money
The currency is the Moroccan dirham. Cards work in most hotels, larger restaurants and shops, but small cafes, taxis and market stalls expect cash, so withdraw dirhams from bank ATMs in the cities. Check your card's overseas fees with your bank before you travel and tell the bank your travel dates. See our first-time travel tips for tipping and bargaining.
Phone
Roaming charges and inclusive-roaming rules depend on your UK or Irish network, so check your plan before you go, or buy a local SIM or eSIM. WhatsApp is widely used in Morocco, including by drivers and guides.
Plugs
Morocco uses plug types C and E at 220 V, so UK three-pin plugs need an adapter. UK devices are made for a similar voltage, so a plug adapter is all that is normally needed.
Booking a Private Tour From the UK or Ireland
Many travelers from the UK and Ireland book a private driver-guide before flying, so that the first and last day run on their own timetable and every stop suits the group. All our tours are private, with a professional driver-guide, and we are available 24 hours a day on WhatsApp, with a reply target of two hours, whatever your time zone. If you are unsure whether to go private, read private tour, group tour or self-drive in Morocco. Then send your arrival airport, dates and group size through the contact form, or browse the private Morocco tours.
